iPhone Hidden album review

An honest review of Apple's Hidden album: what the lock protects, how iCloud and Advanced Data Protection affect it, and when it is not enough.

Updated
3.0out of 5

Free, convenient and well integrated, but it unlocks with the same Face ID or passcode as your phone, so it does little against anyone who can already get into your iPhone.

Verdict: the Hidden album is a good default for keeping photos out of your main grid, and it costs nothing. Its lock, though, is the same lock as your phone. Anyone with your passcode — or your unlocked phone in their hand — can open it. Think of it as a curtain rather than a safe. Your hidden album isn't hidden from the people most likely to look.

What it is

The Hidden album is a built-in feature of the Photos app. You select photos, tap Hide, and they move out of your library into a separate album under Utilities. Price: Free, built into iOS, iPadOS and macOS. It is available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro.

Step-by-step instructions are in how to hide photos on iPhone and how to lock the Hidden album.

What it does well

Zero effort. It is already on your phone, and hiding takes two taps.

A lock by default. On current systems the album is locked: Hidden album, locked by default since iOS 16, at no cost. Apple describes the unlock as Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode on iPhone and iPad.

Sync. With iCloud Photos, hidden items stay hidden on all your devices. If you use iCloud Photos, your hidden photos are also backed up.

Integration. Editing, sharing and the rest of Photos work exactly as usual.

Optional end-to-end encryption in iCloud. Apple's description: iCloud Photos: encrypted in transit and on server; end-to-end only with optional Advanced Data Protection. Turning on Advanced Data Protection is the single biggest privacy upgrade for iCloud Photos.

Limitations

Same key as the phone. This is the core issue. The Hidden album does not have its own secret. Anyone who knows your passcode, or who you hand an unlocked phone to, can open it. That covers partners, family members, a phone repair shop, or someone at a border crossing who asks you to unlock.

Everyone knows where to look. The album has a fixed, well-known location — see how to find hidden photos on iPhone.

One album. There is a single Hidden album. You cannot keep separate collections that someone cannot count, and there is no decoy or duress option.

Camera Roll first. Photos you take arrive in the library and only then get hidden. If iCloud Photos is on, they may already have synced by the time you hide them.

Metadata stays. Hidden photos keep their EXIF data, including location if it was recorded. Check with the photo metadata viewer.

iCloud defaults. Without Advanced Data Protection: Only with optional Advanced Data Protection — meaning that under standard settings, Apple holds the keys to your iCloud Photos.

Privacy model

Your hidden photos are protected by the same device encryption as everything else on the iPhone, and by your iCloud settings in the cloud. That is strong against a stranger with a locked phone, and weak against anyone who can unlock it. The full analysis is in is the iPhone Hidden album secure?

Getting the most out of the Hidden album

  • Make sure the lock is on. Check the Photos settings and follow how to lock the Hidden album.
  • Hide the album itself from the sidebar, so it is not one tap away.
  • Turn on Advanced Data Protection if you use iCloud Photos and are comfortable managing your own recovery options.
  • Do not share your passcode. The album's security is your passcode's security; a longer alphanumeric passcode helps.
  • Empty Recently Deleted after moving or deleting sensitive photos.

How we rated it

We score vaults on four things, in this order: whether the contents are protected by a secret only you hold, how much the app knows about you (account, server, cloud), how well it handles pressure (decoys, hidden vaults, duress), and value for money. Facts come from Apple's support documentation and Personal Safety guide, checked on October 30, 2026; anything the vendor does not state is left out rather than assumed. We make a competing app, sigil., so we try to be explicit about where our view could be biased and generous where a competitor is simply better.

Who it is for

  • People who want photos out of the main grid, Memories and widgets.
  • People who are the only ones who ever unlock their phone.
  • Anyone who wants hidden photos synced and backed up with iCloud.

Who should use something stronger

For those cases, a vault with its own secret makes the difference. See sigil. vs the Hidden album.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone see my Hidden album?

Anyone who can unlock your iPhone with your passcode or biometrics can usually open the Hidden album too. It keeps photos out of casual view, not out of reach.

Is the Hidden album encrypted?

Photos on an iPhone are protected by the device's own encryption when it is locked. In iCloud, protection depends on whether Advanced Data Protection is turned on; see the table in our comparison for Apple's wording.

How can I make hidden photos more private?

Turn on the Hidden album lock, consider Advanced Data Protection for iCloud, and for truly sensitive photos use a vault that needs a separate secret, such as sigil.

Do hidden photos still sync to iCloud?

Yes, if iCloud Photos is on. Apple says photos you hide on one device are hidden on your other devices too.
