Remove photo metadata

Drop in your photos, get back clean copies without GPS, camera or date data. Nothing is uploaded.

JPEG, PNG, WebP or HEIC, as many as you like. On a computer you can also drop them here.

Re-encoding removes all metadata; JPEGs are recompressed at high quality.

This EXIF remover strips hidden metadata — GPS location, date and time, camera and device details — from your photos and gives you a clean copy to save. It runs 100% in your browser: your photos are processed on your own device and are never uploaded, stored, or seen by us.

What EXIF data is and why it matters

When a phone takes a photo, it writes a block of metadata into the file, usually in the EXIF format. Depending on your settings, that can include:

  • GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken, often precise to a few meters.
  • Date and time, down to the second.
  • Device information: make, model, lens, and software version.
  • Camera settings: exposure, aperture, focal length, flash.

Most of the time this is useful — it is how Photos builds maps and timelines. But when you send a photo to a stranger, post it on a marketplace, or share it with a journalist, the location of your home or the time you were somewhere travels along with it. Some platforms remove metadata when you post; many direct channels, such as email or file sharing, do not.

How to use the tool

  1. Choose one or more photos from your device using the picker above (or drag them in on a computer).
  2. The tool reads the file in your browser and removes the metadata.
  3. Save the cleaned copy. Your original file is not modified.

Everything happens in the page. You can confirm this yourself: once the page has loaded, the tool keeps working with your network disconnected.

How to read the results

  • Before and after. The tool shows which metadata it found, such as location or camera model, and confirms what was removed.
  • No location found? Your photo may already be clean — for example, if location access for the Camera is off, or if the app you got it from stripped it.
  • File size changed slightly? That is normal when metadata is removed and the image is rewritten.

To double-check a file, open it in the photo metadata viewer, which shows everything a file contains, also without uploading it.

How to do the same on iPhone, natively

You do not need a tool for most everyday cases on iPhone:

  • When sharing: select a photo, tap Share, tap Options at the top of the share sheet, and turn off Location. Turn off All Photos Data as well if you want to drop other metadata.
  • On the photo itself: open it in Photos, swipe up or tap the info button, and adjust the location to No Location.
  • For future photos: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera > Never.

Do it automatically with sigil.

If you regularly handle sensitive photos, stripping metadata by hand is easy to forget. sigil. strips EXIF and location data automatically on import and on export, so files leaving your vault are clean by default. Photos taken with its private camera also never land in your Camera Roll or iCloud Photos, and everything inside the vault is encrypted on your phone with a 256-bit key that only your sign unlocks — see pattern encryption.

That is especially useful for journalists protecting sources, for medical photos, and for anyone who sends ID copies to landlords or employers.

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser on your device. The photo is read and rewritten locally, and nothing is sent to our servers or anyone else's.

What does the EXIF remover remove?

Embedded metadata such as GPS location, date and time, camera and lens model, and software details. The visible image stays the same.

Does removing EXIF change the image quality?

The goal is a clean copy that looks the same. Depending on the format, the image may be re-encoded, which can change the file size slightly.

How do I remove location from a photo on iPhone without a tool?

In the share sheet, tap Options at the top and turn off Location before sending. You can also remove a photo's location in Photos from the info panel.

Does this remove what is visible in the photo?

No. Faces, street signs, screens, and reflections are part of the image itself. Review the picture before sharing it.
