Keepsafe review
An honest Keepsafe review: encryption, account and cloud model, Decoy Vault, pricing and limits, with verified facts and who it suits.
A polished, mature vault with useful cloud backup, held back by an email-tied account, a subscription-heavy model and limited disguise options on iPhone.
Verdict: Keepsafe is a mature, easy-to-use photo vault with a built-in cloud backup that genuinely helps if you lose your phone. Its weaknesses are structural rather than cosmetic: an account tied to your email, a privacy model based on policy rather than on keys you alone hold, and a pricing page that leans hard on subscriptions. Good for everyday privacy; less suited to high-stakes situations.
What Keepsafe is
Keepsafe (listed on the App Store as "Secret Photo Vault: Keepsafe", by KeepSafe Software, Inc.) is one of the oldest and best-known photo vault apps. You set a PIN, import photos and videos, and they disappear from your regular library into Keepsafe's albums. It runs on iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, Android.
What it does well
Ease of use. Setup takes a minute, and the app feels familiar to anyone who has used Photos.
Cloud backup. This is Keepsafe's strongest feature: Private cloud: 200 items free, up to 10,000 with Premium. Most local-only vaults, including ours, cannot match this today. If your phone is lost, a Keepsafe user with backup has a way back.
Encryption at rest. Keepsafe says it stores files with 256-bit AES at rest (vendor-stated).
Decoy Vault. Decoy Vault with a separate PIN (Premium). Useful if someone pressures you to open the app.
In-app camera. Integrated in-app camera, so photos can skip the Camera Roll. For other ways to do that, see how to take photos without saving to Camera Roll.
Limitations
Account and recovery. Keepsafe's own help center describes the account this way: Account tied to an email; login and PIN reset use emailed codes. That makes a forgotten PIN recoverable, which is nice. It also means anyone who controls your email may be able to reach the vault, and that the vault is tied to your identity.
Policy rather than math. On access, Keepsafe says: Says staff cannot view content; no explicit key-custody claim. We take that at face value, but it is a promise, not a cryptographic guarantee you can verify. Compare this with designs where the key is derived only from something you know — see pattern encryption.
No icon disguise on iPhone. Secret Door disguise is Android-only. You can still hide the app from your Home Screen with iOS features: how to hide apps on iPhone.
Metadata. We did not find EXIF or location stripping documented. Photos you export may still carry GPS coordinates. Check with the photo metadata viewer or clean them with the EXIF remover.
Privacy model
Keepsafe is a service: an app plus an account plus a cloud. That brings convenience (backup, recovery, multi-device) and a larger surface: an email identity, a server, and a company policy that determines who can access what. For most people protecting photos from a curious friend, that trade-off is fine. For people whose threat is a partner who knows their email password, a legal demand, or a border crossing, a vault with no account is a better fit.
Pricing
On the US App Store: US App Store: Monthly Premium $9.99, Yearly Premium $23.99. The free tier: Basic: PIN-locked vault, camera, albums, cloud backup of first 200 items.
The App Store lists many in-app purchase items with similar names at different prices, which makes it hard to know at a glance what you will pay. Read the purchase screen carefully before subscribing.
If you keep using Keepsafe
- Secure the email account tied to Keepsafe with a strong, unique password and two-factor authentication — it is part of your vault's security.
- Use a long PIN rather than a short one. Check it with our password strength checker.
- Set up the Decoy Vault with believable, harmless photos so it holds up if you are ever asked to open the app.
- Hide the app from your Home Screen with iOS, since the icon cannot be disguised on iPhone.
- Strip location data before importing photos you might later share.
How we rated it
We score vaults on four things, in this order: whether the contents are protected by a secret only you hold, how much the app knows about you (account, server, cloud), how well it handles pressure (decoys, hidden vaults, duress), and value for money. Facts come from Keepsafe's help center, website and US App Store listing, checked on October 30, 2026; anything the vendor does not state is left out rather than assumed. We make a competing app, sigil., so we try to be explicit about where our view could be biased and generous where a competitor is simply better.
Who Keepsafe is for
- People who want cloud backup of their private photos and accept an account to get it.
- People who use both iPhone and Android.
- Anyone who values easy recovery over a strict no-account design.
Who should look elsewhere
- People who want no account, no server and no email recovery path.
- People who need hidden vaults with no visible list, with a decoy vault that keeps the others out of sight.
- iPhone users who want a disguised icon.

Frequently asked questions
Is Keepsafe safe to use?
Keepsafe states that it encrypts files at rest and that staff cannot view your content. It is a reasonable choice for everyday privacy, but access is tied to an account and email recovery, which some people will not want.
Does Keepsafe need an account?
Keepsafe ties the vault to an email address, which it uses for login and PIN reset. Details are in the table in our comparison.
What is a good Keepsafe alternative without an account?
sigil. has no account and no server: vaults are encrypted on the iPhone with a key derived from a sign you draw. It does not offer cloud backup yet.
Can I hide the Keepsafe icon on iPhone?
Keepsafe's icon disguise feature is documented as Android-only. On iPhone you can hide the app from the Home Screen using iOS itself.
