How to Find Hidden Photos on iPhone (iOS 18 & 26)
Find the Hidden album on iPhone, bring it back if it's missing, and check the other places photos end up: Recently Deleted, Files, Notes, and apps.
To find hidden photos on iPhone, open Photos, go to Utilities, and tap Hidden, then View Album and authenticate with Face ID or your passcode. On iOS 26, Utilities is under the Collections tab; on iOS 18 it's at the bottom of the single Photos screen. If you don't see Hidden at all, turn on Show Hidden Album in Settings > Apps > Photos.
This guide is about finding your own photos, which is usually the actual problem: you hid something, an iOS update moved things around, and now you can't find it.
Open the Hidden album
iOS 26
- Open Photos.
- Tap Collections at the bottom.
- Scroll down to Utilities.
- Tap Hidden, then View Album.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
iOS 18
- Open Photos.
- Scroll all the way down past your collections.
- Under Utilities, tap Hidden.
- Tap View Album and authenticate.
iOS 17 and earlier
- Open Photos and tap the Albums tab.
- Scroll down to Utilities and tap Hidden.
If the Hidden album isn't there
The album is missing from Utilities when Show Hidden Album is off.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Photos (on iOS 17 and earlier, just Photos).
- Turn on Show Hidden Album.
Go back to Photos; it'll be under Utilities again. You can turn the setting off again once you've found what you need.
Unhide photos
One photo: in the Hidden album, touch and hold the photo and tap Unhide.
Several, or all:
- In the Hidden album, tap Select.
- Tap the photos you want, or Select All.
- Tap the More button (three dots).
- Tap Unhide.
Unhidden photos return to your library at their original date, so they may not appear at the bottom of the grid. Scroll back to when they were taken, or use search.
Other places "hidden" photos end up
If the photos aren't in the Hidden album, check these.
Recently Deleted
Deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days. It's in the same Utilities section and needs Face ID or your passcode. Tap a photo, then Recover. After 30 days they're gone for good unless you have a backup. More in how to delete Recently Deleted photos.
Shared Library
If you use an iCloud Shared Library, the library switcher at the top of Photos (the profile icon or the Library menu) can be set to show only your Personal Library or only the Shared Library. Set it to Both Libraries.
Filters and search
The library grid can be filtered, for example to favorites or to hide screenshots. Tap the sort/filter button and clear filters. Use the search field to find photos by place, date, people, or text in the image.
Locked notes
Photos added to a note and then locked won't appear in Photos. Open Notes and look for notes with a lock icon. You'll need the Notes password or your device passcode, depending on how it was set up. See how to lock notes on iPhone.
Files app
Photos saved with Save to Files live in the Files app, under On My iPhone or iCloud Drive. Use the search field and look for .jpg, .heic, or .png.
Hidden apps
Since iOS 18, apps can be hidden in a locked Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library. A photo app or vault could be there. You can also see hidden app names in Settings > Apps > Hidden Apps after authenticating. See how to hide apps on iPhone.
Apps with photo access
Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos lists every app that has asked for photo access. Apps with their own storage, such as messaging apps or vaults, keep photos inside the app.
Messages
Photos received in Messages are in each conversation's details: tap the contact name at the top, then scroll to Photos.
What you can't find, by design
Some photos are designed not to be found without a secret:
- Encrypted vault apps store photos as encrypted files. Nothing in iOS can display them without the vault's own secret.
- Locked notes with a custom password can't be opened with the device passcode.
That's the point of those tools. If they're yours and you've forgotten the secret, the only way back in is whatever recovery the app offers. With sigil., for example, that's the 12-word recovery phrase you wrote down when you set it up; we can't reset it for you because we never have your key.
If you're trying to get into someone else's photos without their knowledge, this guide won't help, and it shouldn't. If you're worried about a child's phone, Apple's Screen Time and Family Sharing tools are the place to start.
Why your hidden photos were easy to find
If finding them took you two minutes, it would take anyone with your passcode about the same. The Hidden album is a known location, the Show Hidden Album toggle is a known setting, and the lock is your phone passcode. That's fine for keeping photos out of Memories and widgets, but not for keeping them from people who share your phone. Is the iPhone Hidden album secure? explains the gap.
sigil. works differently. Photos are encrypted with a 256-bit key that only the sign you draw on a 5×5 grid can unlock, not your phone passcode. You can keep several hidden vaults, each with its own sign, and the app shows no list of them. There's no Utilities section to scroll to and no toggle that reveals them.
The flip side: you're responsible for remembering the sign and keeping the recovery phrase. If you think you'll lose track, a pattern strength meter check plus a written recovery phrase in a safe place goes a long way.
Recovering photos after a reset
If you restored or replaced your iPhone and hidden photos are missing:
- iCloud Photos on: hidden photos sync like any others. Sign in, wait for Photos to finish syncing, then check the Hidden album.
- iCloud Backup or computer backup: restoring from a backup restores your library, including hidden photos.
- No sync, no backup: they can't be recovered.
Whatever you keep private, keep a backup you trust. See how to securely back up private photos.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the Hidden album on iPhone?
On iOS 26, open Photos, tap Collections, and scroll to Utilities. On iOS 18, scroll to the bottom of the Photos app to Utilities. Tap Hidden, then View Album.
Why can't I see the Hidden album?
Show Hidden Album is turned off. Go to Settings > Apps > Photos and turn it on.
How do I unhide all photos at once?
Open the Hidden album, tap Select, tap Select All, then tap the More button and choose Unhide.
Can I find photos hidden in other apps?
You can see which apps have photo access in Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos, and check App Library's Hidden folder. Photos inside an encrypted vault can't be viewed without its secret.

No. The Hidden album uses the device passcode. You'd need to restore the iPhone, and hidden photos come back only if they were in iCloud Photos or a backup.
