How to Hide Photos From iCloud on iPhone
iCloud Photos syncs everything, including hidden photos. Here's how to keep specific photos out of iCloud, or make iCloud end-to-end encrypted.
You can't hide individual photos from iCloud: if iCloud Photos is on, every photo in your library syncs, including the ones in the Hidden album. Your choices are to make iCloud unable to read them (turn on Advanced Data Protection), to stop syncing the whole library, or to keep sensitive photos outside the Photos library entirely, in an app that stores them locally.
Here's how each works, with the trade-offs.
First: hidden is not the same as not synced
Hiding a photo in Photos only changes where it's shown. With iCloud Photos on:
- Hidden photos are uploaded to iCloud.
- They appear in the Hidden album on your iPad, Mac, and at iCloud.com (behind your Apple Account login).
- Unhiding or deleting on one device does the same everywhere.
So "hide from iCloud" usually means one of three things: "I don't want Apple to be able to see them," "I don't want them on my other devices," or "I don't want them on any server at all." Each has a different answer.
Option 1: Make iCloud Photos end-to-end encrypted
If your concern is that Apple, or someone who gets into Apple's servers, could see your photos, Advanced Data Protection (ADP) addresses it. With ADP on, iCloud Photos is end-to-end encrypted: only your trusted devices hold the keys.
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap iCloud.
- Scroll down and tap Advanced Data Protection.
- Tap Turn On Advanced Data Protection.
- Set up a recovery contact or recovery key when prompted, then confirm.
What to know:
- You're responsible for recovery. If you lose all your devices and your recovery key or contact, Apple can't restore your data.
- Shared Albums aren't covered. iCloud Shared Albums don't use end-to-end encryption, even with ADP.
- Web access changes. iCloud.com access to your data is off by default under ADP and needs approval from a trusted device.
- Every device signed in needs recent software.
- Not available everywhere. Apple has restricted ADP in some regions.
ADP doesn't keep photos off your other devices. If someone uses your iPad, the same Hidden album rules apply there. What is end-to-end encryption for photos? explains what ADP protects and what it doesn't.
Option 2: Turn off iCloud Photos on this iPhone
If you don't want your library in iCloud at all, or not from this device:
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap iCloud, then Photos.
- Turn off Sync this iPhone (labeled iCloud Photos on older versions).
- Choose Download Photos & Videos to keep a full copy on the phone, or Remove from iPhone if you only want to keep what's in iCloud.
Things that catch people out:
- Turning it off doesn't delete anything from iCloud. Photos already uploaded stay there. To remove them, delete them while sync is still on, or manage storage under Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage Account Storage.
- iCloud Backup picks them up. With iCloud Photos off, your photo library is included in your device's iCloud Backup if backup is on. To exclude it, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Backups, tap this iPhone, and turn off Photos in the list of apps.
- Optimize Storage. If your phone was using Optimize iPhone Storage, full-resolution originals may only be in iCloud. Download them first.
- Shared Library. If you use an iCloud Shared Library, photos you add there are visible to other participants regardless.
The step-by-step version, is in how to stop photos syncing to iCloud.
Option 3: Keep sensitive photos outside the Photos library
Most people don't want to turn off iCloud for 20,000 vacation photos to protect 30 private ones. The cleaner approach is to keep the 30 somewhere iCloud Photos doesn't touch.
Built-in ways to do this are limited:
- Locked notes sync with iCloud if your Notes account is iCloud. Use an On My iPhone Notes account to keep them local. See how to lock notes on iPhone.
- Files app, On My iPhone. Files saved under On My iPhone don't sync to iCloud Drive, but they are not separately protected and are included in device backups.
An encrypted vault app does it more cleanly. sigil. is local-first by design: there's no server, no account, and nothing syncs. Photos you import are encrypted on the device with a 256-bit key that only the sign you draw on a 5×5 grid can unlock.
- Import the private photos, then delete them from Photos. With iCloud Photos on, that deletion removes them from iCloud too.
- For new photos, use the private camera, so they're never written to the Camera Roll and never reach iCloud Photos.
- Keep different sets in separate hidden vaults, each opened by its own sign.
Removing photos that are already in iCloud
If the goal is to get photos out of iCloud that are already there:
- Make sure you have a copy where you want it (for example, imported into a vault).
- With iCloud Photos on, delete the photos in Photos.
- Open Recently Deleted (under Utilities; on iOS 26 it's in Collections), authenticate, and delete them there too.
- On a Mac or at iCloud.com, confirm they're gone.
Deletion syncs across devices, so this removes them everywhere at once. How to delete Recently Deleted photos has the details.
Which option fits you?
| You want… | Do this |
|---|---|
| Apple unable to read your iCloud Photos | Turn on Advanced Data Protection |
| No photos in iCloud from this phone | Turn off Sync this iPhone, and exclude Photos from iCloud Backup |
| Most photos in iCloud, a few never | Keep the few in a local encrypted vault |
| Photos invisible on a shared iPad or Mac | Don't keep them in an iCloud-synced library; see shared family iPad |
Before sharing any of these photos later, strip location data with the EXIF remover.
Frequently asked questions
Do hidden photos sync to iCloud?
Yes. With iCloud Photos on, hidden photos upload like any other photo and appear in the Hidden album on your other devices.
Can I exclude specific photos from iCloud Photos?
No. iCloud Photos syncs your whole library. To keep a photo out of iCloud, it has to be outside the Photos library, for example in an app that stores it locally.
If I turn off iCloud Photos, are my photos deleted from iCloud?
Turning it off on one device doesn't delete what's already in iCloud. To remove photos from iCloud, delete them in Photos while sync is on, or manage iCloud storage.
Does Advanced Data Protection hide photos from Apple?
It makes iCloud Photos end-to-end encrypted, so Apple can't read them. It doesn't stop them from syncing to your other devices.
Are photos in iCloud Backup if iCloud Photos is off?
Yes. When iCloud Photos is off, the photo library is included in iCloud Backup if backup is on.
